Material design (developed under the codename Quantum Paper)[1] is a design language that was created and used by Google. It was announced at the 2014 Google I/O conference.[2] Material design aims to bring a consistent user experience to all of Google's properties, whether on the web or a native operating system like Android. Google's director of Android user experience, Matias Duarte, stated that "unlike real paper, our digital material can expand and reform intelligently. Material has physical surfaces and edges. Seams and shadows provide meaning about what you can touch."[2] Material design was first implemented into Android's core user interface with the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop.
